Episode #161 - Seasonal Reset: Get Summer-Ready with Ease

Summer Ready with Ease, kick off summer with more calm, better routines and storm-ready peace of mind. Welcome back to Organizing with Ease, I'm your host Diana Moll. If this is your first time here, I welcome you. This is the podcast where we cut through the chaos and help you build organizing systems that actually work, especially during the busiest, messiest seasons of life. We're launching our June series, Summer Reset, and I'm starting with one simple question. Does your home... feel like it's in summer mode or is it in survival mode? If you got a pile of pool towels in your laundry room, your fridge is holding five half-used jars and your hallway is doubling as a lost and found, you're not alone. This episode is your invitation to slow down, clear the decks and reset for a season of fun, flow and yes, even a little storm prep.

Let's make space for what matters most this summer together. Why a summer reset matters. Summer is here or almost here for some of us, right? Depending on where you are. And if you're like many of my clients, this season brings a mix of excitement and exhaustion. Some of you are still wrapping up the school year. There are final exams, field days, teacher gifts, and end of year parties. Others, well.

You've already crossed the line. Maybe that finish line, the backpacks have been tossed in the corner, and that sound of, I'm bored, has already started echoing down that hallway. Graduation caps are being tossed, calendars are filling up with family visits and travel palance. And let's not forget, the fridge is now the most visited room in your home. This is the in-between moment. right as one season ends and the next one begins. It's the perfect time for a reset. But here's what happens. Life speeds up. We think summer will feel slower, but in reality, it often feels and becomes a free fall of snacks, wet towels, car trips, last minute store runs. Are you shaking your head and you're thinking, yep, and smiling, you've got that covered?

You blink and then all of a sudden it's August and you're overwhelmed by everything you didn't get to do. So let's not repeat that pattern this year, okay? So instead of falling into summer, we're going to step into it with intention. That's what this whole June summer reset series is all about. And let me say this clearly, you don't have to do everything. You don't need a color coded chart for chores. or a Pinterest-worthy beach bag set up. You just need a few small, smart resets that help you feel grounded, calm, and ready. One client of mine recently said, I'm proud of my kid for graduating, but now I feel like I've graduated into chaos. We kind of laughed together about that one. And then we made a plan. We carved out space for a summer family command center. We put together a meal rotation for easy weeknights. and cleared the hallway of school clutter. It didn't take long, but it changed the whole mood of her home. A recent study of the UCLA found that people who described their homes as cluttered had increased levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. That means that when your environment is overstimulating, your body feels it, even when you're trying to relax. So let's start summer off differently. Let's give ourselves permission to pause.

Breathe and shift, not with pressure, but with clarity. The secret of change is to focus on all of our energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new. Quick pause, my friend. Let's build a new rhythm that works for real life.

Less stress, more sunshine. Less clutter, more clarity. Let's get real. When it comes to organizing during the summer, most of us don't have time for a full blown overhaul. We've got sunscreen spills, snack wrappers under the car seats, and the laundry seems to sometimes multiply overnight, even more so than the school year. But this is where a mini reset becomes your best friend.

And I'm not talking about hours of sorting and labeling. I'm talking about those small doable wins that make your day run just a little bit smoother and help you feel more in control. Here are a few examples that can give a quick boost. Ready? A fridge refresh. You know those half-use condiments, wilted greens and leftovers from a week ago? Take 15 minutes to toss what's expired and group what's still good.

Use a few clear bins to organize by categories. Remember, think grab and go snacks, drinks or meal preps. It's amazing how a clean fridge can make dinner feel less overwhelming. And entry mo-ke-over. If your front hallway looks like a garage sale has just exploded, well, you're not alone. Switch out winter gear. If you have not yet done so, we have got to pack those up.

Or your school clutter, same thing, for a simple summer drop zone. Beach towels, hats, flip-flops, all in one basket. Add a small hook for keys or a bin for sunscreen. Suddenly getting out the door doesn't feel like a scavenger hunt. And why not start that mom station? I had a client who said her kitchen island had become the command center for chaos. The mail, the backpacks, the receipts, the chargers, the lunchboxes,

You name it, it was there and it can be found there. So we created a two bin system. One for action items like permission slips, things that needed to get signed, you know. And one for reference, papers that you just can't wait. She texted me a few days later and said, I finally made a sandwich on my countertop again. How excited did that sound? That sound amazing. Designate a shelf, a basket even.

with a pre-portioned snacks, granola bars and water bottles. You can cut down on the kitchen traffic and all those endless, I'm hungry requests, especially when the kids are home 24 seven. The magic is in the little things. You don't have to organize the whole garage or redo your pantry to feel progress. That one clear drawer does make a difference. The bin of labeled sunscreen and bug spray. That's momentum, that's peace. that drawer you avoid, the overflowing car console, the basket of unmatched socks? Pick one this week. You'll be amazed how much lighter it feels when just one part of your home is reset and ready. Start where you are, use what you have, and do what you can, by Arthur Ashe. So now let's take a moment here for our Florida friends and those coastal listeners. We have to take a deep breath and that is why, because we're gonna be talking a little bit about that hurricane prep, here we go, let's take a deep breath. Because June 1st marks the start of hurricane season. While it's easy to put it off, I promise you a little prep now saves so much stress for later. I'm gonna run through just a couple of things that we need to do, ready? You wanna update and complete your hurricane prep checklist, broken down by who and what to prepare for. Ready? Hurricane season supply list for everyone in the household. You wanna have water, of course, one gallon per person per day for a minimum of three to seven days. Non-perishable food, which include canned goods, dried snacks, and protein bars. A manual can opener. Flashlights, extra batteries, of course, a first aid kit, battery powered or hand cranked radio, preferably from NOAA and OAA, power bank, chargers and extension cords, cash, so that means that because of course the ATMs may be down, waterproof pouch for important documents like IDs, insurance, backing information, et cetera, prescription medications, at least a seven day supply, garbage bags, bleach and wipees, matches or lighter, tools to shut off gas, water and electric if necessary.

Of course, you want to take pictures of your interior and exterior of your home and your surroundings. For the babies and the young children, want to consider, remember the diapers, the wipes, the diaper cream, formula or baby food, bottles and sterilized water, children's medication, fever reducers, allergy medication, or any prescription medicines as well. Don't forget those favorite stuffed animals, comfort items, and maybe some of those books. For your furry pets, don't forget the pet food and water for three to five days, portable bowls, medications if they need it, a crate or a carrier, extra collar, leash and ID tags, waste bags or a litter box supplies. Here's a little bit of a tip. Use a large waterproof bin or roller crate and label it clearly. Store it in an accessible hallway or garage self.

Revisit it every June 1st and involve the kids. Turn it into like a mini scavenger hunt with a checklist. Just don't forget, according to FEMA, nearly 60 % of Americans do not have a disaster preparedness plan. Let's not be in that number. Preparedness is not fear, it's peace of mind. So now let us build your seasonal flow. Are you ready? Now that your essentials are in place, your fridge has room to breathe.

Your hurricane bin is stocked and your space feels a little bit lighter. Let's talk about something we've come back to often on this podcast and that is rhythm over rigidity. Throughout the year, we talked a lot about building systems that support your lifestyle, whether it's setting up your week with intention, creating a drop zone that works or using routines to reduce decision fatigue. The same applies to summer.

If anything, summer needs those gentle systems more than ever. Let's face it, when the schedule changes and the house gets louder and messier, it's easier to fall into survival mode. You know, but a gentle seasonal flow gives you something to return to, something flexible, something steady. Here's what we can take a look at for the summer. You ready? Why not?

We wake up and we wind down those windows. Instead of the rigid bedtimes, think about waking up between eight or nine o'clock versus maybe that alarm clock at like seven. This gives your family some structure and some grace. Weekly anchor points like theme nights, tacos on Tuesday, movie night on Saturday. These become memory makers and meal planning shortcuts. a visual family calendar on the fridge, a whiteboard, or digitally shared. Include things like camp days, work calls, play dates, and even some mom's coffee break. You know I had to throw that in there, right? You do. Of course you do. Sunday night resets. We talked about this all the time. We do. In the summer, it can be shorter and sweeter. Review the week ahead. Prep your snacks. Check the weather. Talk. through upcoming events as a family. I recently worked with a family who told me they lose all structure in summer. Are you one of those families? And it left them feel overwhelmed, completely feeling overwhelmed and reactive. So what we did was we set up simple rhythm, simple, three family meetings per month, a shared Google calendar, and a little dry erase checklist for each child. It wasn't perfect. but they felt more connected, more prepared, and yes, way less frazzled. Remember, your seasonal flow doesn't need to be packed or polished. It needs to feel supportive. It really should flex within your life and create just enough clarity so you can actually enjoy the summer without feeling like you're constantly playing catch up.

Structure gives you freedom and freedom lets you thrive. like that quote, it's someone unknown, but I needed to share that one. So if you've been craving calm into the chaos, this is your sign. Build your summer flow with intention and not perfection. So here's your summer reset challenge for the week. Choose one space, your fridge, your bathroom, a drawer, a pool bag, and give it a 20 minute reset.

Then take 15 minutes to check your hurricane supplies to start building your ready bin, because you are going to remember going to be going through it. Must do. Summertime is always the best of what might be, by Charles Bowden. So let's set the tone now for a summer that's going to be what? Lighter, calmer, and a little bit more organized. Trust me, my friends, you've got this. And I'm here with you every step. of the way. Until next week.
